2010 - Can you believe it? Ok, maybe it's just because I'm getting older, but that seems crazy to me. At any rate, 2010 is shaping up to be an awesome and busy year for SUMC youth ministries!
To kick it off, here is the January schedule:
Jan. 3: Regular meeting at the church 5-7 looking at the faith of people from the Old Testament.
Jan. 10: Regular meeting at the church 5-7 talking about what Jesus had to say about faith.
Jan. 15-17: Retreat at Oglebay! This is always a good time so be sure to sign up by Jan. 10 to reserve your space! We will be continuing our discussion of faith, and there will also be time for swimming, games, and all sorts of fun activities.
Jan. 22: Teen Nite at the church, 7-9:59. This is always a fun time for all youth from the community.
Jan. 24: Dress rehearsal for the youth-led service on January 31.
Jan. 31: Youth-led service at all 3 morning services. In the evening, we will be having a fun night of making pizzas and playing games.
Other upcoming things in February include the sub sale, winter jam concert, and the famine.
Friends and new people are welcome at all events, so hope to see you there!

December Youth News
In our culture, we have intertwined the birth stories from Matthew and Luke to the point that we don’t even realize which parts are in which book. This month we will take a look at the birth narrative from these two perspectives, with a special emphasis on how Luke focuses on Mary and Matthew focuses on Joseph. And then we’ll close off the month with a Christmas party.
December 5: Breakfast with Santa. Youth are encouraged to volunteer in this wonderful ministry our church offers to the community. Please sign up to help!
December 6: Regular meeting from 5-7. We will begin by looking at the book of Luke and Mary’s portion of the birth story. Youth are encouraged to read Luke 1:26-38 before our meeting.
December 13: Regular meeting from 5-7. We will continue our study of the birth story by looking at the book of Matthew and Joseph’s role. Youth are encouraged to read Matthew 1:18-25 before our meeting.
December 20: We will have a Christmas party during our regular meeting time of 5-7. We will have pizza for dinner, make graham cracker houses, and have a white elephant gift exchange. Youth should bring a wrapped gift of something they no longer want from home, or something that costs less than $5. See Katy with questions.
December 27: No youth group. Enjoy time with your family.
**There may be other events happening over Christmas break, so watch your email and the chronicle for more information**
Other upcoming events to put on your calendar:
January 15-17: Retreat at Oglebay in West Virginia. Cost for each youth is $35, but talk to Katy if that is an issue. Deadline to sign up for retreat is January 10.
February 26-27: Famine lock-in at the church.
March 19-20: Girls night lock-in at the church. The schedule for this is still being worked out, but I am aware there is a middle school dance that Friday. The first portion of the event will be for high schoolers only. There will also be a portion for mothers on Saturday. The event will end mid-afternoon Saturday.
**Plans for a guys night are also in the works but no date has been set yet**

sign ups, and more! :-)
This Sunday is trash pick-up. I know it's going to be a crazy Sunday with the
work mission meeting at noon and then youth group in the evening, but I need youth who can help with trash pick-up from 3:30-5. This is a service project the youth have committed to, and if you have driven our section of State Route 3, you know that it needs it!
Also, I want to let you know about the sign-up sheets that are on the youth bulletin board. You can sign up on the board, or email me to sign up. Most of these are things I have mentioned before, but I just want to keep them on your radar as I know with my busy schedule, knowing about things too far in the future doesn't always help.
1. Memorial Day is quickly approaching and we are again going to park cars. The day is broken into 2-hour shifts: 8-10, 10-12, 12-2, and 2-4. I need adults as well as youth to sign up for these shifts, and it is first come first served for getting the good times.
2. June 5-6 is Relay for Life. This will be happening at the high school. We are
joining the SUMC team, and there will be a sign-up for times to walk closer to the date, but I am trying to figure out how many youth are interested.
3. June 12-14 is Youth Annual Conference. Friday will be a day at Cedar Point and then we will stay the weekend and youth will have an opportunity to make decisions about how things are done in our conference of the UMC. We will stay at a hotel in Lakeside (on Lake Erie). This event is FREE!
4. Sometime the week of June 14-21 there will be an end-of-year pool party at Pam Jones house. Details are still be worked out for this, but just to let you know that will be happening.
Thank you for all you do!

It's almost Easter!
The main reason I am writing is that there is a retreat scheduled for April 17-19 and I do not have many youth signed up yet. I am trying to figure out if there is interest in this, or if it is not going to be feasible and we should have another plan. I am fine either way, but I would appreciate responses as to whether you are interested or not.
Other upcoming events include Sunrise service which will require the youth to be at the church at 6am. The service will be at 6:30. I need to definitely know who is going to be here April 12 and able to help with the service.
It would also be helpful to know who is interested in participating in the Relay for Life at the high school on June 5-6. We will be participating in the SUMC team, and I would like to know who is interested and available to participate.
The final thing I want to bring to your attention is that June 12-14 is Youth Annual Conference (YAC). We will take a group to Cedar Point Friday (youth attending YAC do not have to pay for this) and then spend the rest of the weekend at Lakeside. This is a conference event where youth take leadership and make decisions about things that happen in our conference.
For the last two things, I do not need a commitment, but I would like to know who is potentially interested. It would be helpful to have a pretty solid idea of who is available for the retreat and commitment as far as the sunrise service.

At 5pm we will have pizza, and then the doors open at 6 for the concert which starts at 7.
Sunday is a regular meeting from 5-7. We will be planning the Sunrise service and also discussing the meaning of Lent.

Updates :-)
Sunday is the youth service - participants should be at the church by 8am! Unless you are in J.O.Y., in which case you should be there by 7:45 am (if you don't know what that is you're probably not in it!)
Sunday evening we will be going to Glow Putt in Gahanna. This is free for those who participate in the service, and $7 for others. We will leave at 5 and return at 7:30. Let Katy know if you are coming ASAP so we make sure we have enough drivers.
Thanks all! Have a fantabulous day!

Here are a few reminders about upcoming events.
First - this Sunday (Feb 22), we will be having a fun night at Alfred and Katie Yates'
house. Their address is 10333 Hoover Woods in Galena. We are meeting at the church to
carpool at 4:30 and will return by 7:30. I do need to know if you are interested in
carpooling so that I have enough drivers, especially since we do not have the bus. At
this point I have Zac, Mea, Sarah, Madi, and Nicole for carpooling. You also may just
meet us at Alfred and Katie's. The fun night will be approximately from 5-7 still.
Second - the 30-hour famine is March 7-8 which is Saturday - Sunday. We will meet at the
church at 2pm. If people need to come later due to the band/choir competition or other
things going on, that's fine. Just let me know when you will be arriving so that I can
let you know where we will be. Youth should eat lunch on Saturday, and then we will not
eat again until dinner on Sunday. Parents of youth who participate will be invited to
the closing worship service and parent appreciation dinner during youth group time (5-7)
that Sunday.
Finally - the youth are leading the 8:30 and 9:45 services on March 15. Youth who are
interested in participating, and have not been at youth group the past 2 weeks should let
me know as soon as possible that they want to be involved and what they would be willing
to do.
As always, continue to check the blog (sunburyyouth.blogspot.com), the chronicle, the
newsletter, and the bulletin board for information.

A Brand New Year!
Welcome to 2009! Can you believe it?
So thank you to all who have turned in their retreat commitment. We still have space if anyone else is interested in attending so let me know! Friends are welcome. I just need to have a complete count by this Sunday (January 11) so I can make final plans.
A note of information: The 30-hour famine has been changed from March 6-7 to March 7-8 because of the band and choir competition on the 7th. We will still have the lock-in, just on Saturday night instead. And the parent appreciation dinner will be during youth group time.
Watch the newsletter and chronicle (as well as here) for other important dates!
As for this week - we will be having a regular Bible study meeting. We will also be working on the videos for the Famine competition for the next two weeks so we can show the video in February at the church services. (For those who were not at the leadership meeting, there is a competition between the 6-7th grade group and the 8-12th grade group to see who can raise the most money and donate the most food for the famine. The competition winner will be allowed to eat before the competition loser at the parent appreciation dinner when we break our fast.)
As always - have a great week and I hope to see you on Sunday! Let me know if you have questions or concerns about anything! :-)
